Thouasnds of victims of domestic violence could be given a lifeline by a scheme to turn old mobile phones into emergency alarms.
The Fonesforsafety campaign encourages people to donate their old handsets, which are then reconfigured to become “999 only” personal alarms.
The phones, which will be distributed free of charge, can also receive incoming calls and text messages for added reassurance. There are an estimated 52 million unused mobiles in Britain, and that number is set to increase as people dispose of their old handsets in favour of newer models bought as Christmas presents.
